Interview with Sassy Reviews

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about the craft of writing. Often through trial and error. Today I sat down with Sassy Reviews to divulge some of my experience in writing By Still Waters ahead of its release.

Here are 5 things that I took away from this interview that I’d like to share with aspiring writers.
1. Write Every Day (Even If It’s Just a Little)
Consistency beats perfection every time. You don’t need to write 2,000 words daily to be a “real” writer. Even 15 minutes of focused writing can help you maintain momentum and improve your craft over time.
Actionable tip: Set a timer for 15-30 minutes and write without editing. Let the words flow, even if they’re messy.
2. Read Voraciously and Widely
Great writers are great readers. Read within your genre to understand conventions and expectations, but also read outside your comfort zone. Poetry, non-fiction, graphic novels—they all have something to teach you about storytelling.
Actionable tip: Keep a reading journal to note techniques, phrases, or structures that resonate with you.
3. Embrace the Messy First Draft
Your first draft doesn’t have to be good—it just has to exist. Give yourself permission to write badly. The real magic happens in revision, but you can’t revise a blank page.
Actionable tip: Turn off your internal editor during the first draft. Save the criticism for the revision phase.
4. Find Your Writing Community
Writing can be isolating, but it doesn’t have to be. Connect with other writers through workshops, critique groups, or online communities. Having people who understand the challenges and celebrate the victories with you is invaluable.
Actionable tip: Join a local writing group or participate in online writing communities on platforms like Twitter or Discord.
5. Develop Your Unique Voice
Don’t try to write like your favorite author. The world already has a [Famous Author Name]—what it needs is YOU. Your unique perspective, experiences, and voice are what will make your writing stand out.
Actionable tip: Write about topics that genuinely interest or move you. Authenticity naturally leads to a distinctive voice.
Final Thoughts
Writing is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself, celebrate small wins, and remember why you started writing in the first place. The world needs your stories.
